Toad Proving

Jeremy Sherr & The Dynamis School Graduates 2013 Raasay Island Scotland
At the end of each Dynamis School, it is our habit and pleasure to hold the last class on the Isle of Raasay near the Isle of Skye in Western Scotland. Raasay Island is composed of the oldest rocks in Great Britain, the terrain is tough but beautiful, the mountain and sea views compelling. There in the old mansion of the Clan Macleod, we spend a week of intense study, nature, walking, sailing and this being Scotland some serious drinking.
In the midsummer the sun hardly sets and pineal glands hum with boundless energy and wonder. It is also our tradition to conduct a small proving during this week. I get quite apprehensive about the substance of this proving as a poor choice can result in a miserable week. But I leave the decision in the hands of fate, ask for an omen, sit back and wait. This year the omen came on the first night, though I did not realise it at the time. A group of us sat up late drinking fine Scotch whisky supplied by my friend John Morgan of Helios. So far it was a normal Raasay evening, but soon enough the mood turned base with the worst collection of jokes I have ever had the displeasure of hearing. It was something between schoolboy and prison humour. It takes a lot to shock me in this department but the low level of conversation was nearly disgusting. I put it down to the whisky.
Early the next morning I went for a walk on the seaside road musing about the week ahead of me, when I met John walking in the opposite direction holding something in his hand and sprouting a big grin. He had found a dead toad on the road, semi- squashed but intact and well preserved. The proving was on.
