California Dreaming

Searching for a genus epidemicus is one of the most challenging and rewarding missions a homoeopath can undertake. Finding a group of remedies to match the larger totality of a collective disease, including its inner meaning and outer manifestations, requires potentising our perception to the highest degree.

To accomplish this mission the homoeopath must summon four qualities: fire, air, earth and water. Fire for passion and intuition (Organon §100), air for intellect and wisdom (§73), earth for the hard grind of seeing many cases (§101), and water for melting together the epidemic totality (§102). Fire is the passion driving the mission. This is necessary because relative to taking an individual case an epidemic requires much more dedication, perseverance, time, effort and skill.

While taking an acute case might last 10 minutes and a chronic case one to two hours, a minor epidemic needs at least 20 cases, and a pandemic requires many, many more. Fire energy drives us forward, fuelled by the belief in the difference this work can make to so many people. The driving force of Fire stands for freedom from prejudice, the burning and purification of our preconceptions. In the language of the Organon we graduate from paragraph 1 to paragraph 100, the gateway to epidemics. Solving epidemics is a task which requires us to be 100 times more dedicated and 100 times less prejudiced. This is one of the reasons that our search must be transparent.

Fire is also the spark of intuition, that which takes us beyond linear logic, a leap of perception required to match remedy to epidemic. Like all sparks this can hold an inherent danger. Uncontrolled intuition can easily lead to folly if it is not based on the observation of very many cases and the study of the epidemic as a whole. Like dilution without succussion, intuition without work does not result in potentisation. Fire is a tool in my search for the genus epidemicus of AIDS in East Africa. In this case the spark led me to the radioactive period.
